Bobby Sherman, the boyish pop heartthrob and teen idol of the late 1960s best known for his role in Here Come the Brides and chart-topping hits like Little Woman, has died at the age of 81.

His wife, Brigitte Poublon, confirmed his death on Instagram Tuesday, months after disclosing that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

Sherman became a household name in 1968 when he starred as Jeremy Bolt, a shy lumberjack, on the ABC series Here Come the Brides.

Though the show aired for just two seasons, his soft-spoken charm and musical talent earned him a devoted fanbase, with weekly fan mail reaching over 25,000 letters.

In addition to acting, Sherman had a successful music career, with several Top 10 Billboard hits including La La La (If I Had You), Julie, Do Ya Love Me, and Easy Come, Easy Go. By 1972, he had achieved seven gold singles and 10 gold albums. In 2005, TV Guide ranked him the eighth greatest teen idol of all time.

Born Robert Cabot Sherman Jr. in Santa Monica, California, in 1943, he played 16 instruments and began performing during his teenage years. He was discovered by actor Sal Mineo, leading to his first acting role on Honey West in 1965.

He soon became a regular on the music variety show Shindig!.

After his fame began to fade, Sherman turned to public service. He trained as an EMT and later worked with the LAPD, helping train officers in CPR and emergency response. His final television appearance came in 1997 on an episode of Frasier.

Sherman was married to Patti Carnel from 1971 to 1977 and later married Poublon in 2010. He is survived by Poublon, his sons Tyler and Christopher, and six grandchildren.
